The original facility (often times referred to as the Springfield County Jail or Greene County Justice Center) was built in 1936 as part of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The current facility was built in 2001. It is a medium-security facility. Prisoners are either waiting for trial or serving a sentence of one year or less.
The Greene County Jail Springfield Missouri has a capacity to hold 610 prisoners, but it regularly processes about 700 prisoners each day. The facility uses a “direct supervision” management of the prison population.

Visitors’ Guidelines
If you are visiting in person, please follow these visitors’ rules which are posted in the lobby.
- You will be searched when entering and leaving. Your car may also be searched.
- Women should avoid wearing underwire bras because of the security system.
- You should bring valid identification.
- You must be over 18 to visit a detainee. If you are under 18 and the detainee is your parent, please bring a copy of your birth certificate.
- A maximum of four visitors at a time may visit one detainee.

Dress Code

- No torn or shredded clothes.
- No low-cut tops, halter tops, or midriff tops.
- No miniskirts or other short clothing.
- You must wear shoes and a shirt.
- Leave all purses and bags in your car or in a visitor’s locker.
